Wow, it seems like just yesterday that the U.S. Government initiated it’s 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act. In case you missed it, from 1998-2008, the U.S. Mint released 50 new quarter designs released in order of their addition to the United States. The last state of Hawaii concluded the final stage of release on Nov 3, 2008.

I chose not to really make this a design commentary, but in the truest sense of the word, coins are artistically designed. Actually, a coin can be considered fine art, as each coin is designed from sculpture. I won’t digress on this topic, but it is quite fascinating and you can read about the process by reading an interview with commissioned coin sculptor, Joseph Menna.
